The roof of a church built on top of a prison believed to held St Peter before his crucifixion has collapsed.
Sniffer dogs were sent in to go through the rubble at the San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, but no injuries were reported.
Fire chief Marcello Lombardini said no victims were found at the church, which is usually only open for marriages.
The church, called St Joseph the Carpenter, was built on top of the ancient Mamertine prison, where the defeated Gallic king Vercingetorix and Saints Peter and Paul are said to have been held.
Wooden beams and terracotta tiles were scattered across the floor, while one beam crashed through the floor and the ceiling of the chapel below.
The church is on the western edge of the Roman forum, near Piazza Venezia, and was built in 1598.
Italy has looked to attract foreign investment to protect its tourist sites, including the Colosseum, as budget austerity has cut into spending on heritage.
